We don't need to be certified to be the next Skyrim.

Look, we all love Skyrim. There's no new Elder Scrolls game, even though it was announced in 2018 back when E3 was still around. Fans were longing for something to scratch their Skyrim itch, and Bethesda isn't delivering. Definitely a service, Starfield is far from 'Skyrim in space' and if you're like me, you'll find Fallout 4 a bit of a mixed bag. bag as well

Obsidian's upcoming RPG Avowed can't avoid constant comparisons to Skyrim. I get it, people find out what they miss about Skyrim, and Avowed's presentation is pretty similar. Both games are in first person (you can also play Avowed in third person). Fantasy RPG Obsidian has previously worked with Bethesda on Fallout: New Vegas to great success.

Why am I glad I threw out the romantic option?

Sometimes RPGs can make romance feel like the only important option. Ignoring it completely is probably best.

I agree, I don't want to be Skyrim.

Visually they are similar on a surface level as well, with the scenes looking quite realistic. With a touch of magical magic. There was a strange non-human man. There is a lot of nature. The battle is familiar. That feeling is right.

But developers are at pains to distance themselves from those comparisons. It says it's more like The Outer Worlds, as it's closer to Obsidian's very good space RPGs in scope and focus. It has open zones instead of a massive open world like Skyrim, trying to strike a balance between its writing and storytelling strengths. While there is still a lot of meaningful side content that will take you away from the main narrative, yes, it emphasizes exploration. But it also focuses on choices and consequences.

It's pretty clear that Avowed isn't trying to be the next Skyrim. I'm sure that's disappointing to many fans who really wanted it to be. But I have a follow-up question. Why would you want Obsidian, a studio whose strengths are vastly different from Bethesda's, to make a Skyrim spiritual sequel when Bethesda is making a true sequel? Moreover, why do you need more Skyrim when Skyrim already exists?

Dragon Age: The Veilguard really made me want to play it.

The new Dragon Age makes me yearn for the deeper roleplaying options we saw in Baldur's Gate 3.

Now everything is like Skyrim.

Okay, I'm being a little dishonest. I know why you want one like Skyrim, because Skyrim is awesome. You want a game that's like Skyrim but different to keep you fascinated again, but Avowed will never be that game. What makes Skyrim special is now all over the triple-A space. Many open world games have followed in its footsteps. Skyrim To some extent, by expanding the world and relying on the flexibility of the sandbox, you'll find games that express the same expansiveness anywhere.

That's why no game can really replicate the feeling of playing Skyrim for the first time. It had already happened and left its mark. Avowed wanted to dig deeper instead. And that has value too. It might not be the game-changer that Skyrim was, and that's okay.

I'm more interested in seeing Obsidian's unique writing abilities set in a fantasy setting than I am in playing another expansive game with scale and technological innovation rather than a good story. Regardless, Avowed lives up to expectations. Whether or not that makes any sense to the fans regarding this story remains to be seen. But we know it's not Skyrim and it never will be.
