A magnitude 6.9 earthquake followed by a magnitude 7.1 earthquake rocked southern Japan on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. A tsunami of up to 1 meter high is expected to hit or has already reached some coastal areas of Kyushu and Shikoku, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The first quake struck at a depth of 33 kilometers, followed by a second quake at a depth of 25 kilometers nearby. The U.S. Geological Survey said the Japanese government has set up a special task force to deal with the quakes.
