The Park Melbourne gastro outbreak: Wedding venue temporarily closes after third gastro outbreak

A wedding venue that was hit by two gastro outbreaks in one week has temporarily shut down after a third outbreak.

At least 100 people reported gastro symptoms after attending events at The Park Melbourne in Albert Park on the September 14 and 16.

The total impact of the outbreak included 70 medical professionals who attended a conference at the venue and 30 reception guests at a wedding.

Now more people have come forward with reports of illness after an event held at the venue last weekend, the venue confirmed in a statement on Tuesday night.

The venue has decided to temporarily pause all functions scheduled for the next two weeks until an investigation into the three incidents is complete.

“We had taken all precautionary health & safety measures ahead of events held on the weekend, however, as there have been reported illnesses from an event on the weekend, we have decided to temporarily stop operating functions for the next two weeks until we have further information,” the statement said.

“It is possible that these outbreaks are not linked, but we have decided to close out of an abundance of caution until we have further information.”

The venue said “it is not a decision [they] have taken lightly” but the “health and wellbeing of [their] guests is [their] highest priority”.

“It is not a decision we have taken lightly, and we have found alternate locations for all parties impacted by our temporary closure,” they said.

“Park’s closure is entirely voluntary and has not been requested by the Department of Health.”

An investigation into the outbreaks continues with initial reports from the Department of Health suggesting the likely cause of the outbreaks is norovirus, a common and highly contagious form of gastro.

“We take this matter extremely seriously,” the statement said.

“We have the highest standard of health & safety practices in place, and are deeply saddened that this outbreak has occurred and affected a number of people.”

We are in frequent contact with impacted parties and have expressed to them how sorry we are that this outbreak has impacted their special day.”

About 30 wedding guests experienced fever, nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting after attending the reception at The Park in Albert Park on Saturday night.

It has now emerged about 70 medical professionals, who attended a conference at the venue two days before the wedding, fell ill with similar symptoms after eating at the venue.
