The Sega Master System was more powerful than the NES, but couldn't compete with the strength of the Sega Genesis. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 required a different approach. It focuses on routes that encourage more exploration. Instead it tries to match the speed and look of the console version.

Like most of the original 8-bit Sonic games, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was available on both the Master System and Game Gear, however, the Game Gear's small screen only displayed about a third of the game. Sonic Pocket Adventure also has elements from Sonic 3 & Knuckles, with fun boss fights with Knuckles. Playing Sonic Pocket Adventure on the original Neo Geo Pocket Color feels great. Because the joystick on this little handheld device is more responsive and satisfying than any other handheld device that's appeared on Sonic.

Considered a mobile game through its release on Nintendo Switch, Sonic Mania was designed by ROM hackers who specialize in Sonic games and is the ultimate love letter to the series and fans of the original Sega Genesis games. Sonic Mania left behind the quirky voice acting, melodrama, and many hedgehog characters common to modern Sonic. Instead, it's a return to the original cast and game concept that dominated the 90's gaming world.

The game has revisited and recreated many classic scenes, from the original Sonic games to Sonic CD and even obscure games like Sonic SegaSonic the Hedgehog. However, Sonic Mania's best scenes are probably the originals, with Studiopolis Zone and Mirage Saloon Zone stand out as highlights.
