It's not every day that someone discovers new lore about Skyrim, so we're grateful to Twitch streamer TESbenefactor. who discovered these secrets in an unlikely place: the Bethesda Merchandise Store (good spot, GamesRadar+)
Currently available for $49 at the Bethesda store, the Elder Scrolls Whiterun Honorary Whiterun Citizen Chest is a small metal box containing a previously unknown secret. It contains a necklace, badge, map of Whiterun. and a carefully written letter from Jarl Balgruuf.

The letter names you the Dragonborn, Thane of Whiterun, and details previously unknown lore. This coin dates back to the time of Rasman the Red, who appears to have been the first Thane of Whiterun. I'm sure this warrior is worthy of the title. And there's nothing like Ragnar. The vaunted young redhead met a grisly fate at the hands of Matilda, the Shield Maiden. Only two coins have been counterfeited, with Balgruuf owning one and you (and everyone else who Fork over $49) own another coin.
We also learn that the horse that appears on the flag of Whiterun “represents freedom, nobility, strength. and loyalty.” Additionally, Jarl Olaf One-Eye, whose spirit I so easily dispatched in Dead Men's Respite, created a commemorative coin to celebrate his victory over the dragon Numinex. Numinex's skull hangs above the throne at Dragonsreach, having been placed kept there after he died in captivity.
TESBenefactor They claim in their tweet that Jarl Balgruuf has “horrible handwriting.” Yes, his signature looks a bit juvenile. But the handwriting on the letter is legible and quite good. It is likely that Proventus transcribed the letter and Balgruuf simply signed the letter. But I like to think that the Jarl sat down and wrote this letter to me personally. After all, I saved Whiterun from a dragon and currently have the biggest wealth in Skyrim in a tank in Breezehome. Plus, I'm an Archmage, a Harbinger, a Listener, and a Gray Fox… I mean, a Guildmaster. That has to count for something.
The new legend may have a few stories. But it's nice that we can still learn things about Skyrim after more than a decade since its release.
