Iran says it does not want regional escalation but must ‘punish’ Israel

ISTANBUL: Turkey's foreign ministry has urged its citizens in Lebanon to leave the country if they do not need to, as the security situation could deteriorate rapidly, the Turkish foreign ministry said late Sunday.

Tensions have been high since the assassination of Palestinian Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday, a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed Fouad Shukr, a top commander of Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group.

Turks in Lebanon should exercise caution and not travel to the provinces of Nebatieh, South Lebanon, Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel unless necessary, the ministry said in a statement.

“Those who do not need to be in Lebanon should leave Lebanon while commercial flights are still operating, if possible,” the statement said, adding that Turkish citizens should avoid traveling to Lebanon unless necessary.

Earlier on Sunday, France and Italy urged their citizens in Lebanon to leave the country over the risk of a military escalation in the Middle East.
