Coles giving away Pokémon collectables to all shoppers

Supermarket collectables have become a huge drawcard to the weekly family grocery shop, from the Coles Little Shop to Woolworths’ Discovery Garden.

Now, customers have expressed their excitement at details of Coles’ latest collectables campaign – a collaboration with Pokémon.

From next Wednesday, February 7, all customers will receive a free Pokémon Coles Builder character with every $30 spent in one transaction. The offer will be available at Coles supermarkets, Coles Express and Coles Online. Bonus characters will also be on offer for shoppers who purchase selected products from participating brands.

The 35 characters up for grabs include Pokémon favourites Pikachu, Squirtle, Charmander and Bulbasaur. The collectables are made from 100 per cent certified cardboard sourced from responsibly-managed forests, and can be recycled at the end of play.

Fans of the grocery giant’s latest promotion took to Facebook to rejoice in the news, details of which were leaked by a Coles employee in the Woolworths Disney 100 Wonders and All Woolworths & Coles Collections Group page.

“Ooh I’ll be collecting, love Pokémon,” one wrote.

“OMG, please don’t tell my kids!” a second commented.

While a third said: “Oh can’t wait for these!”

Last October, Coles posted a $9.2bn first quarter sales revenue, an increase of 4.7 per cent, crediting the result partly to one of their past collectable campaigns.

“Supermarkets sales revenue of $9.2bn for the first quarter increased by 4.7 per cent as the business cycled the highly successful Magical Builders collectable campaign in the prior corresponding period,” the supermarket said in its Q1 results.

Magical Builders was a range of 35 “innovative, fun and truly sustainable” paper figurines modelled on Harry Potter characters which were available at Coles supermarkets and Coles Express stores.

“Excluding tobacco sales, which continued to decline in line with industry trends, sales revenue increased by 5.9 per cent,” the report said.
