Australia’s most popular dog name for 2023 revealed

The most popular dog name in Australia has revealed – and it’s a little unconventional.

According to Bupa Pet Insurance, Luna was the number-one moniker registered on its policies between January and September this year – for the fifth in a row.

Rounding out the top 10 were Daisy, Milo, Bella, Coco, Teddy, Charlie, Frankie, Archie and Ruby.

“Just like some children’s names, some pet names can divide popular opinion,” Bupa’s Shannon Orbons said.

“Perhaps that’s why classic names continue to top the list, though the trend for more unique dog names continues to grow.

“So, if you’re in your local offleash park and you call out ‘Luna’ or ‘Daisy’, and some other friendly neighbourhood dogs run up to you, you’ll now know why.”

Other, slightly more unusual names that have risen in popularity include Gucci, PEPE, Yoda, Bundy, Pedro, Lady, Dougal, Chilli, Daphne and, maybe weirdest of all, Mr.

The popularity of Luna, which also topped pet insurance company PetSure’s database – of more than 700,000 Aussie animals – also correlates with trends in names for human babies.

PetSure chief marketing officer Jenny Williams told The Sydney Morning Herald it’s beloved not only for its Harry Potter association, but the fact that numerous celebrity couples (including John Legend and Chrissy Teigen) had chosen it for their offspring.

“Names like Scruffy, Spot and Socks are half as popular as they were in the early 2000s,” she said, attributing this to owners wanting more “human” names for their pets.

“Over the same period, more human-like names like Luna, Ruby and Charlie have soared in popularity as pet names.”
