Astro Bot has now won more GOTY awards than any platformer ever.

summarize

  • To date, Astro Bot has won 104 Game of the Year awards, making it the most awarded platformer ever.

  • It surpasses the previous record holder, It Takes Two, which won 88 GOTY awards.

  • So far, the record only goes back to 2013, but it's unlikely that earlier would have been enough of a reward for a single platformer to outperform Astro Bot.

Most people who have ever played Astro Bot will tell you that they knew it was a special game as soon as they started playing. Let's be honest, most of us know when the first trailer dropped. Astro's wave of momentum continued throughout the final few months of 2024 and into 2025, as outlets named it game of the year left and right. So many people have done so that it has now won more GOTY awards than any other platform game in history.

According to the website that tracks the Game of the Year awards (thanks NextGenPlayer), according to the website's count. Astro Bot has won 104 awards and counting.– Although that record doesn't come close to being the overall record holder. That record will probably always belong to Elden Ring, but it seems to be enough to make it the winningest platformer of all time, surpassing it. 88 It Takes Two Awards, Up in 2021

TheGamer's Game of the Year – 2024

With 36 different teams voted by TheGamer, here's our list of the best games of the year.

It Takes Two is the only platformer to win more GOTYs than any other game in a single year, at least during The Game Awards era. But that doesn't mean Astro Bot automatically won more GOTYs than any other platformer. Maybe. There was a year where big platformers won a lot of awards but were beaten by something like Elden Ring or The Last Of Us Part 2. That turns out not to be the case.

Astro Bot has won 104 Game of the Year awards and counting.

Making it the most acclaimed platform game ever.

One platform game I immediately went to when checking my GOTY score to make sure Astro Bot really was the record holder was Super Mario Odyssey, while 37 Odyssey Awards Goes on to show how underrated good platform games are when we get our awards season. Released the same year as The Legend of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, it seems that if BOTW hadn't released in 2017, many GOTYs would have moved to Odyssey, and the platformer wouldn't have finished in third place behind Horizon Zero Dawn.

It is worth noting that GOTY trackers only go back to 2013.So it was a year before The Game Awards started. And the best-of-the-year title from Geoff Keighley's show has been unofficially agreed upon as the big one. However, it looks like the site has compiled retrospective totals from previous years and is working on 2012.

That means there's a chance Astro Bot's newly won crown will be taken away quickly. Even though it seems unlikely. Even though games like Super Mario Galaxy 2 were undoubtedly named Game of the Year in 2010 by some outlets in 2010, there were fewer awards up for grabs back then. But it's highly unlikely that the game will take home more than 104 trophies. Astro will continue to collect trophies in the coming weeks as well. 15 more titles will surpass GOTY, Death Stranding in 2019.
