8 Horror Games Where The Antagonist Wins

Key Takeaways

  • Horror game villains sometimes win, like in Resident Evil: Revelations 2.
  • In Outlast, The Walrider ends up victorious despite the protagonist’s efforts.
  • The Evil Within’s Ruvik possesses Leslie in the end as part of the game’s complex narrative.

In horror games, you are usually at a disadvantage for most of the adventure. After all, the game wouldn’t be very scary if you could easily lay waste to every enemy that came your way. So, you’re typically outnumbered or underpowered compared to what you’re facing off against.

The forefathers of fear and revolutionaries of the revolting, these games pave the way for horror.

Don’t worry, though, because at the end of the game, you usually overcome the odds and get the best of whatever foe you’re dealing with. Yet, that doesn’t happen every time. On some occasions, the villain of the game gets the better of you, and evil wins in the end. It’s rare to see, but it happens in all of the following horror titles.

Resident Evil: Revelations 2

In Revelations 2, the main villain is the brilliant scientist Alex Wesker. Prior to the events of the game, she was diagnosed with an incurable disease. Her plan to survive is to transfer her consciousness into another host. She has to find the right subject, so she captures various people, including three of the game’s four protagonists: Claire Redfield, Moira Burton, and Natalia Korda. The other protagonist is Barry Burton, who tries to save them.

Altogether, they manage to bring down Alex’s operation and kill her. Or so it seems, until the final cutscene of the game, where Natalia starts showing some Alex tendencies, proving that the villain actually managed to get her consciousness inside the young girl.

Slender: The Eight Pages

Slenderman behind the a tree from the original Slender game.

Slender: The Eight Pages is a horror game that feels like you’re stuck in a nightmare. This is because you spend the entire game wandering around a very dark forest while being stalked by the terrifying SlenderMan, who is the master of jump scares.

Your goal is to find eight sheets of paper before the creature gets you. However, once you find all of them, the beast still gets you. So, there is no way actually to beat the titular villain. All you can do is delay the inevitable.

Fear 2: Project Origin

The most well-known character from the Fear series is the spirit known as Alma. She isn’t always treated as a pure evil character, but she is one of the villains of the second game. The protagonist, Michael Becket, is tasked with eliminating her.

Yet, she doesn’t have such an antagonistic opinion of him. In fact, she has a strange interest in him due to his telepathic potential. Things then get a little strange towards the end of the game, as Becket has to deal with plenty of hallucinations. While he’s hallucinating, Alma is assaulting him, leading to her getting pregnant. That was no accident, as Alma wanted to have his babies, likely so they have some of his power.

Dead Space 3 And Awakened DLC

Dead Space 3 Awakened screenshot of Isaac watching Bretheren Moons oribiting Earth.

While there are several villains in the Dead Space series, the Brethren Moons are technically the main ones. These are giant space-faring Necromorphs (the main alien species in the series) that intend to kill and take over everything.

In Dead Space 3, Jacob Danik attempts to revive the moon known as Tau Volantis, allowing it to wake the other moons so that they can wipe out humanity together. However, the two heroes of the game, Isaac Clarke and John Carver, manage to stop Tau Volantis. This makes it seem like the Earth is saved and everything is okay. That is until the Awakened DLC, where you find out that the other moons did wake up. Isaac and Carver still attempt to stop them, but once they reach Earth, the moons are already invading. The duo then crashes into one of them as the credits roll.

Isaac Clarke hallucinates a lot during this DLC, so there are theories that the invasion was just another one. Yet, this has never been confirmed.

4

The Evil Within

There aren’t many story-driven horror games out there, but The Evil Within should count as one since it contains a very complex narrative. It’s so complex, in fact, that people have different theories on what actually happens. Most agree, though, that the main villain, Ruvik, is somewhat victorious at the end.

Much of the game takes place in a world created from Ruvik’s mind. While he runs the place, Ruvik is also a prisoner in this strange world. One of the other inhabitants is an interesting man named Leslie, who has distinct body movements. When the main character, Sebastian, leaves Ruvik’s world to return to reality again, he notices Leslie has escaped, too, and is walking away. Yet, his signature body movements are nowhere to be seen. This is evidence that Ruvik has possessed Leslie’s body and escaped his own world.

3

Outlast

Outlast screenshot of Walrider with a green aura around them.

There are a few villains in the Outlast series. In the first game, though, the main antagonist is The Walrider. It is a swarm of nanomachines with supernatural-like abilities that causes much of the chaos that ensues at the Mount Massive Asylum, where the game is set. The protagonist is journalist Miles Upshur, who desperately wants to escape the place.

In the process, he eliminates The Walrider’s host, William Hope. However, the creature then jumps into Miles’s body. The protagonist still tries to escape the Asylum but is gunned down by some mercs on the order of Rudolf Wernicke, who is one of the Asylum’s scientists. The Walrider then gets out and starts killing everybody as the game ends. The fact that The Walrider is still alive at the end of the game and that pretty much everyone else is dead means it counts as a victory for the monster.

Resident Evil

Resident Evil HD Remaster screenshot of Albert Wesker pointing a gun at Jill.

Even in the best ending of the original Resident Evil game, the main villain, Albert Wesker, doesn’t really beat the protagonists. Still, the whole ordeal is a success for him overall. This is because killing the protagonists is more of his employer, the Umbrella Corporation’s goal. He’s just going along with it, which he has no issue with doing. However, what he really wants is to get away from Umbrella and betray them.

Breaking away from a powerful corporation like that isn’t easy, though. Thankfully for him, he awakens a Tyrant who stabs him in the stomach, making everyone think he died. Yet, because of the virus in his system, he lives through the ordeal and escapes. It doesn’t seem like getting stabbed and left for dead was Wesker’s initial plan, but it makes it much easier for him to escape his employers. Therefore, it was arguably more beneficial for him than if everything had gone as planned.

The Last Of Us Part 2

Ellie looks on as a weakened Abby carries Lev.

The Last of Us Part 2 is an interesting game because it’s hard to really say who the villain is. After all, both Ellie and Abby are playable characters who could be considered villains. Yet, it’s more accepted that Abby is a villain protagonist – sorry to all Abby fans out there.

While she doesn’t have a great experience in the game, the muscle-bound survivor does get a fairly decent ending. She and her new ally, Lev, survive the game and head off to meet up with other members of her group known as the Fireflies. This is long after getting the thing she truly desired at the start of the game, which was revenge for the murder of her father. Ellie, on the other hand, loses pretty much everything in her pursuit of Abby and her desire for revenge. Therefore, Abby is clearly the winner.
